Former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell will give his annual “State of Buckhead” address to the Buckhead Business Association (BBA) later this month.
The former mayor will give his address during the BBA’s breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 at the City Club of Buckhead.
Massell, 87, served as Atlanta’s mayor from 1970 to 1974, the 53rd mayor in the city’s history, and since leaving office has remained in public view. In 1988, he became the founding President of the Buckhead Coalition, an invite-only civic organization comprised of local CEOs, and also served on the board of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.
“We are excited that Mayor Massell will continue his annual tradition of delivering the ‘State of Buckhead’ address to the Buckhead Business Association,” said Greg Davis, president of the BBA. “Mayor Massell’s tireless efforts are responsible for so much of the positive in the Buckhead community and the city of Atlanta, and we look forward to hearing about his vision for what’s to come in 2015 and beyond.”
As mayor, Massell is credited with establishing many of the icons and assets that helped Atlanta grow into the city it is today, from the Omni Coliseum to Woodruff Park to the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), and even the small Charlie Loudermilk Park in Buckhead. He is also credited with opening City Hall opportunities to minorities.
