Just how thoughtful was Gen. William T. Sherman?
While on his tour of the South during the War Between the States, Sherman telegraphed President Abraham Lincoln to let him know he picked up a gift for the Commander in Chief.
“I beg to present you as a Christmas gift the city of Savannah,” Sherman said in the telegraph message 141 years ago today — on Dec. 22, 1864.
