Remarks at The Georgia Room, September 9, 2024, Marietta, Georgia

This is a rough transcript.

Thanks for coming out tonight on a Monday. Appreciate it.

I gave a similar presentation a few months ago about death on the rails, and what struck me most as I started looking into that presentation and started researching for it and pulling it together, was frankly, the many ways that people could meet their demise on the railroads.

And I don’t know what’s worse, that somebody would put together a presentation on death on the rails, or the people would actually turn out for that presentation! So, I’m not casting aspersions. I’m just saying everybody in the room came tonight for it. I appreciate that.

I don’t — you don’t want to sound gruesome, but not too long ago, at another presentation I was giving, somebody had asked me if I had any idea of how many people had been killed by trains over the years. I thought for a minute. I thought, “That’s a great question.” I gave an answer that was both vague and not incorrect. I said, “lots.” I wasn’t wrong. I mean, lots of people have been killed by trains, but compiling a list is just not possible, and for someone like me who wants a definitive answer to that question, it can be a little bit frustrating at times.
