From LinkedIn: The News Industry

The news industry needs to understand what it is trying to accomplish. For too long, it has suffered from groupthink, and its ego was undeserved. Journalists thought they owned the news, and too many publications refused to accept a new form of communication. They acted like people building canals in the 1850s.

I love journalism and think it is sorely needed. If it is threatened, it is threatened by the industry’s leaders with a dubious vision, who have made and continue to make bad decisions and alienate half of their audience. Being critical doesn’t mean I oppose journalism. I am critical of it because I want it to thrive.

You should come to one of my railroad talks. I often talk about newspapers in the context of railroads and the “impartial role” they often played.
