Written by Todd DeFeo, “Running Home” is a song about chance, faith and the willingness to pursue something meaningful despite uncertainty. Its recurring imagery of cards, dice, wagers and losing streaks presents love and life as games in which nothing is guaranteed, yet the possibility of reaching something better makes the risk worthwhile.
The earliest documented recording is a live performance from Sept. 17, 1999, on WDUB-FM in Granville, Ohio. That version first appeared on Find a Way Home and was later included on Live for the Day, The Journey So Far and Where the Road Unwinds.
Two demo versions were recorded during fall 1999. The first remained incomplete and unreleased. The second became the opening and title track of Running Home and was also included on The Todd DeFeo Collection. Additional versions followed, including a November 1999 rehearsal, a Christmas Day piano arrangement and live performances on WDUB-FM and at an April 2000 recital. Four more takes were attempted in December 2019, but none was released.
The song’s gambling language masks a deeper search for belonging. Home is not presented simply as a place. It represents connection, purpose and the hope of finding someone willing to share the journey. The narrator may come up hard luck, but he continues to roll the dice.
That balance of confidence and vulnerability gives the song its emotional center. “Running Home” is not ultimately about winning. It is about continuing after disappointment and trusting that the next chance may lead somewhere worth reaching.
The song also became a durable part of DeFeo’s live repertoire. “Running Home” ranks as his most frequently performed song in the available concert statistics, suggesting that its themes of uncertainty, persistence and belonging continued to resonate well beyond its original release.
