The Story Behind 12 Tracks

Released April 13, 2021, 12 Tracks was created as a compact collection to offer at live performances. Rather than documenting one recording period, the CD brings together songs and performances from several eras, selected to represent different styles and arranged primarily for musical flow.

The album opens with “Roll Away Train,” which also served as a live-show opener around this time. From there, the sequence moves between performances recorded at the Southeastern Railway Museum and WDUB-FM and newer standalone recordings made between 2017 and 2021.

Several songs reach much further back. “Blind Faith,” recorded in January 2021, was one of Todd DeFeo’s earliest compositions and dates to 1995. “We’re Living in a Tabloid World,” “Good-Bye to Yesterday,” “Slip Away (Tomorrow Real Soon),” “She’s An Angel” and “Live for the Day” connect the collection to recordings and releases from the late 1990s and early 2000s.

The tracks were remastered for the album, giving the collection a consistent presentation despite the range of recording dates and locations. Joe Nevark is credited as producer.

Still available on CD, 12 Tracks serves as a concise introduction to more than 25 years of songwriting. It is less a conventional album than a merchandise-table sampler, pairing familiar live material with newer recordings in a sequence designed to capture the range of the catalog.
