The Story Behind Where the Road Unwinds

Released in April 2021, Where the Road Unwinds revisited Todd DeFeo’s live WDUB-FM recordings roughly 20 years after they were made. The 20-track collection gathers performances recorded in Granville, Ohio, between September 1999 and November 2000.

DeFeo performed solo on guitar, harmonica and vocals throughout. The recordings were remastered from the original source tapes, resulting in better sound quality than the versions on the earlier releases Find a Way Home, Keep On Holding On and Live for the Day. Those albums are now out of print, and Where the Road Unwinds effectively replaced them while preserving most of their material.

The album follows the recording chronology, beginning with the September 1999 performances and ending with songs recorded Nov. 29, 2000. It includes familiar recordings such as “Walking in Paradise,” “She’s An Angel” and “Find a Way Home,” along with performances that had remained unreleased for no particular artistic reason.

Among the newly issued material were “No Way Out,” “Just About Gone,” “Lost in the Night,” “Chasing Angels” and “Don’t Know What I Can’t Explain.” The version of “Live for the Day” included here was recorded March 21, 2000, rather than the April 11, 2000, performance used on the earlier album of the same name.

Still available on CD, Where the Road Unwinds is both an archival restoration and a fuller account of an important period of live performance.
