The Story Behind The Todd DeFeo Collection
Released as a limited direct-sale album in fall 1999, The Todd DeFeo Collection brought together two existing releases and added a glimpse of what was coming next.
The collection included Running Home in full, followed by the five live WDUB-FM performances previously issued as Find a Way Home, placing the songwriting demos of Running Home alongside the newer live radio performances recorded in Granville, Ohio, in September 1999.
The album opened with a special bonus track, “Don’t Know What I Can’t Explain.” Although the precise recording details are no longer clear, the recording appears to be from a group of demos made in fall 1999. Other demos recorded at the time include “Slip Away (Tomorrow Real Soon),” “For Tonight,” “Fade Away,” “Day Is Short” and “Where the Road Unwinds.”
An earlier demo of “Where the Road Unwinds” was captured during the broader demo period for Running Home. It, along with “Day Is Short,” would reappear during live performances in 2000.
In that sense, The Todd DeFeo Collection served as both a summary and a transition, gathering the principal recordings released in 1999 into a single package, while its opening track pointed toward the next body of songs already taking shape.
