The Story Behind Live for the Day
Released Aug. 26, 2000, Live for the Day was conceived as a way to combine and replace two earlier EPs, Find a Way Home and Keep On Holding On. Rather than documenting a single concert, the album collected performances recorded during four appearances on WDUB-FM in Granville, Ohio, between September 1999 and April 2000.
Todd DeFeo performed solo on guitar, harmonica and vocals during each appearance. All four were guest spots on regularly scheduled programs, with interviews and conversation between songs. The spoken portions were removed for release, but the musical performances were otherwise presented with little editing, preserving the immediacy of the original broadcasts.
The first five tracks were recorded Sept. 15 and Sept. 17, 1999, and had previously appeared on Find a Way Home. The next five came from the Feb. 15, 2000, performance released as Keep On Holding On. A performance of “Live for the Day,” recorded on April 11, 2000, was added as the closing track, giving the expanded collection its title.
Sold and promoted through an online music site, Live for the Day compiled nearly seven months of live radio recordings into a single release. The result was less a conventional live album than a document of an evolving body of songs, captured plainly and directly during a series of intimate broadcasts.
